British Era of Lord Hastings

The Expansion During the Time of Lord Hastings (1813-22 AD)

  • In the Third Anglo-Maratha War, the Maratha chieftains made another desperate attempt to regain their lost independence and prestige in 1817 AD.
  • The Peshwa took the initiative in forming a united front of Maratha chieftains, which were stringulated under the strict control of the British Resident.
  • The Peshwa attacked the British Resident in Poona in November 1817. Appa Saheb attacked the Residency at Nagpur and Madhav Rao Holkar got prepared for the war.
  • Governor-General Lord Hastings 1813-22 forced Scindia to accept British subjugation and defeated the armies of Peshwa, Bhonsle and Holkar, and the Peshwa was dethroned and pensioned to Bithoor near Kanpur.
